What to look for:
Cape Cod campgrounds have strict size limits. Most Cape Cod campgrounds — including Nickerson State Park — have site length limits between 35 and 40 feet. Some popular private campgrounds cap at 30 feet for certain loops. Know your total rig length before booking any Cape destination.
Summer Cape Cod traffic is severe — plan your driving days accordingly. Route 6 through the Cape in July and August can back up for miles on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. If you're moving camps on a weekend, plan to drive early morning or mid-week to avoid sitting in traffic with a rig.
A smaller unit opens up the most options on Cape Cod. Class B campervans and small Class C units (under 25 feet) have access to the widest range of Cape campgrounds. A 40-foot Class A works at Shady Knoll and similar larger private parks, but rules out several of the most scenic spots.
The Berkshires are excellent for larger rigs with no Cape traffic. Western Massachusetts — October Mountain State Forest, Tolland State Forest — has full hookup sites, far less congestion, and some of the best fall foliage in New England. A great alternative if Cape sites are booked solid.
