Burning Man
For one week each year, tens of thousands of people gather in Black Rock, Nevada to form a temporary community called Black Rock City. Burning Man residents make camps, host live performances, build art installations and travel in elaborate "mutant vehicles" that resemble Mad Max creations.
Participants abide by the 10 Principles, which includes civic responsibility, decommodification, and radical self-reliance. During Burning Man, you'll learn survival skills and build a community of fellow adventurers. Artists, musicians, sculptors, and craftspeople turn the gathering into a giant art project. At the end of the week, residents set a giant Burning Man sculpture ablaze. This harkens back to the day when a group of friends burned a wooden man on a San Francisco beach in 1986, kickstarting a yearly tradition that became a global celebration. Burning Man's 2026 theme is Axis Mundi, exploring the interconnectedness of the natural world.
ACTIVITIES & ENTERTAINMENT
Essentially, residents create the entertainment. Some participants elaborately decorate their cars and turn them into "mutant vehicles." Others host theme camps that encourage everyone to work together on a project. Performers make music, while sculptors create art installations. You'll also hang out with friends, meet new people, and practice your survival skills.
ON-SITE AMENITIES
Black Rock City sells nothing but ice. You'll need to bring your own supplies, including food, water, shelter, clothing, fuel, and medicine. Burning Man encourages sharing supplies with others, so ask fellow participants if you need help. The few on-site amenities include porta potties, toilet paper, medical stations, and Recycle Camp. If you need an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, visit Playa Info in Center Camp. Check out the official survival guide for more information. While you're at it, brush up on camping safety, and learn how to stay cool in the heat.

RVING AT THE EVENT
Burning Man is an RV-friendly event. Because there are no hotels at the site and very few public services in or near the event, having an RV is smart, especially if you plan on sticking around for a few days. Because it's the desert, you've got the real possibility of both dust and rainstorms. Even when it's not storming, there will still be dust everywhere, thanks to the tens of thousands of people moving about. Have you ever tried cooking in a dust storm? The resulting meal is not the greatest culinary feat, unless, of course, you fancy a little grit with your dish. In an RV, you'll be able to cook, shower, and just hang out, safe and sound from the elements when you need a break. The organizers insist that you come in an RV that's ready to handle up to a week without needing to be repaired. The following list will help make sure you won't get into dire situations out there and will also help you be a conscientious RVer who leaves no trace.
Fresh water: Aside from the generosity of others, there's nowhere in the event to get potable water. Therefore, you should make sure your tanks are full and that you have a few 5-gallon water bottles on hand. After filling your tanks, make sure they aren't leaking and that the RV plumbing is producing fresh water.
Gray water: Be sure to fill your gray water tank by running water in your sink. Doing so will let you know if there's a leak. If there isn't, then empty the tank and try not to use it until you get to the event.
Black water: Flush your toilet a few times to fill your black water tank to check for leaks.
